Kathleen “Kat” Thompson is a passionate watercolor artist, art instructor, and lifelong student of the visual arts whose original fine art celebrates the beauty hidden in everyday places. Drawn to atmospheric light, historic architecture, garden pathways, reflections after rain, and the grace of horses, she creates paintings that invite viewers to slow down, look closer, and rediscover the wonder that often goes unnoticed.
Rather than simply recording a scene, Kat interprets it through design, light, color, and personal experience. Her paintings are inspired by the feeling of a place—the quiet invitation of a garden gate, the glow of afternoon light on an old building, or the fleeting mood created by changing weather. Through expressive watercolor and thoughtful composition, she seeks to capture not only what a place looks like but also what it feels like to be there.
Kat earned her Associate Degree in Fine Arts with High Honors from Florida State College at Jacksonville in 2010 after five years of collegiate study on a talent grant. She studied under respected artists and educators, including Larry Davis, Mary Joan Hinson, Patrick Miko, Mark Howard, and Chris Kolupski.
Her artistic development has also been influenced by extensive independent study of artists and authors such as Charles Reid, Joseph Zbukvic, Richard Schmid, Ian Roberts, and Charles Sovek.
With more than two decades of painting experience, Kat works primarily in watercolor and mixed media, creating original fine art inspired by the historic charm of St. Augustine, hidden gardens, architectural details, atmospheric landscapes, and equine subjects. Her work is held in public and private collections throughout the United States.
In 2026, a serious accident temporarily changed how Kathleen experienced the world. During months of recovery, painting became both a creative outlet and a source of healing. Time spent observing light, nature, and everyday moments from a new perspective deepened her appreciation for resilience, gratitude, and beauty. Many works created during this period reflect themes of hope, renewal, atmosphere, and the quiet joy of rediscovering freedom one step at a time.
In addition to her studio practice, Kat teaches watercolor painting as an art instructor and enjoys helping students develop confidence, creativity, and technical skills while discovering their own artistic voice.
Artist Statement
I paint because I am fascinated by the way light, atmosphere, and color transform ordinary scenes into something memorable. I am drawn to places that invite curiosity—a garden gate, a historic street, reflections after rain, or a quiet moment that many people might pass by without noticing.
My goal is not simply to paint what a place looks like, but to capture what it feels like to be there. Through watercolor, I strive to create paintings that evoke discovery, memory, peace, and connection.
I believe beauty is often found in the overlooked corners of everyday life. My hope is that each painting encourages viewers to pause, look more closely, and experience the world with renewed appreciation and wonder.
